farmacia de costa

Non-PRO Spanish to English Medical Medical: Health Care types of pharmacies
Spain: report on a survey of pharmacist practices comparing different types of pharmacies.

The TYPES being:
1 - farmacia de barrio
2 - farmacia rural
3 - farmacia de paso [I understand this to be a "downtown" pharmacy in a commercial district -- i.e., a high-traffic area with a lot of people passing by]
4 - farmacia de costa

Easy to find descriptions of the first three... but "de costa"? Any idea what this refers to? I'm thinking, ok, not a neighborhood pharmacy, and not out in the sticks, and not center-city -- so, on the edge of town???

Thanks, everyone... for just the insight I needed. I thought it had to be costa as in "coast" but didn't see why that location would mean a distinctive type of pharmacy.

I did find one reference (lost track of it) comparing a "farmacia de costa" (though it wasn't defined) with a "farmacia de capital" (yet another term).

This is from a pharmacist who moved from a rural pharmacy to a "farmacia de costa" on the Costa Brava:

"he intentado adaptar su gestión al concepto de una farmacia de costa, ya que en verano podemos llegar a dar servicio a aproximadamente 10.000 personas para pasar durante los meses de invierno a no más 1.500 habitantes, habiendo un incremento en este período durante el fin de semana por tratarse de una zona de segundas residencias. Esta gran diferencia conlleva que haya modificación de los horarios, llegando a trabajar 120 días seguidos, sin cerrar en toda la semana."

Hi Lesley I'm sure Helena's interpretation is right, and Ian's point is the key: it really means pharmacies situated in tourist/holiday locations, which in Spain almost always means coastal locations. Very many Spaniards have second homes on the coast where they spend weekends, and of course in the summer there's a huge influx of foreign tourists. So it makes a vast difference to the pattern of business, which will be just like any small-town pharmacy during the week for most of the year but busy at the weekend and very busy indeed in the summer months. So it affects opening hours, and probably means keeping high stocks of the kind of medications tourists and temporary visitors typically want, as Ian also suggests. All this is why "farmacia de costa" is regarded as a specific kind of pharmacy in the trade.

pharmacies near the coast

I imagine it means this. I live near the sea in Spain and there's a pharmacy less than 1 km from the coast that's open every day of the week. I have a feeling it's open 24/7 but I'm not completely sure.

I didn't use 'coastal pharmacy' because I couldn't imagine anyone saying, 'I'm going to the coastal chemist's/pharmacy. However, in this case it might work. Thank you, Charles :)
