Asiu ...

Hahahahahaha :)))

Lucky, I'm not having coffee at the very moment
Jacek Siminski Apr 14, 2014:
Guy Richie in that case IMHO :)
Joanna Carroll Apr 14, 2014:
oh, and don't call my by the surname of my ex! Joanna, Asia, or any other diminutives you come up with will do :)
George BuLah (X) Apr 14, 2014:
... Statham, mostly Jason Statham :)

Joanna Carroll Apr 14, 2014:
That was a treat! thanks Jacek! I forgot how good a film it was :)
Jacek Siminski Apr 14, 2014:
odpowiadając na pytanie Pani Carroll: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrHEu-c2UFg 1:20 :)
Frank Szmulowicz, Ph. D. Apr 13, 2014:
Miejmy nadzieję, że do własnej i niedziurawej.:)
Kasia Bogucka Apr 13, 2014:
George BuLah (X) Apr 13, 2014:
it's atavistic ;)

Frank Szmulowicz, Ph. D. Apr 13, 2014:
No właśnie, więc coś w tym jest.
Kasia Bogucka Apr 13, 2014:
Portfel wydaje się być zasobniejszy niż portmonetka.
George BuLah (X) Apr 13, 2014:
you have to remember however that every single entry, according to Proz law ;) should be filled with at least one word coupled with the question, but it's easy ... for example ...

"Ha, ha, ha... ! That's great! Like Kowalscy say"

Frank Szmulowicz, Ph. D. Apr 13, 2014:
Am I correct to think that at one time "portfel" meant a man's wallet? I see portfel damski, but this may be relatively new. Anyway, is portfel "gender-neutral" or is there an assumption here about who controls the physical portfel as opposed to portfel meant as "finances"?
George BuLah (X) Apr 13, 2014:
now, less than 40 to go

Kasia Bogucka Apr 13, 2014:
It's 40 now :p
Frank Szmulowicz, Ph. D. Apr 13, 2014:
Only 40 to go. The truth is that all the entries are good. In order not to slight anyone here, a good translator should be able to use them all in one sentence and be paid accordingly.
George BuLah (X) Apr 13, 2014:
Kasiu,
we have the 100-entry thread here in the EN-PL pair :)

snupek (asker) Apr 13, 2014:
No, I haven't returned the translation yet :)
Kasia Bogucka Apr 13, 2014:
Is it too late for yet another answer, I wonder?
snupek (asker) Apr 13, 2014:
Ha, ha, ha... ! That's great!
Kasia Bogucka Apr 13, 2014:
and not Mr Joe Bloggs in Ireland ;) what a loooong thread this is
Frank Szmulowicz, Ph. D. Apr 13, 2014:
Given the over one billion Chinese in the world and the fact that the Chinese economy has the largest trade surplus anywhere, perhaps we should aim at the wallet of Mr. and Mrs. Wang, which assumes that they are still married and of like mind on financial matters.
George BuLah (X) Apr 13, 2014:
the winner, which is obvious ;)

snupek (asker) Apr 13, 2014:
What a pity... I wanted to see your option :(
BTW, I'm looking for a proofreader for occasional proofreading of my own texts. :) Anybody?
George BuLah (X) Apr 13, 2014:
Aaaa... I give up... auntie and uncle have come visit me, and... hmm... I am having lag problem, cannot fix it ;) so... you know ;) ...

snupek (asker) Apr 13, 2014:
jeszcze nie przyznaję, zalecają poczekać 24 godz. :)
George BuLah (X) Apr 13, 2014:
moment, moment, jeszcze... moja niegotowa ;)

snupek (asker) Apr 13, 2014:
George BuLah (X) Apr 13, 2014:
___0000o__\\\|///__o0000___
George BuLah (X) Apr 13, 2014:
Mike?
Can you see my answer here? No!
so, please don't speak about the winner ...
Watch me now ...

mike23 Apr 13, 2014:
once the question is closed, let the winner put all these neat ideas in the glossary so that they are not forgotten. Have a good day
George BuLah (X) Apr 13, 2014:

snupek (asker) Apr 13, 2014:
Joanna, your comments are great. It's always all about feeling, much more than about translation itself. Thanks again!
snupek (asker) Apr 13, 2014:
Joanna Carroll Apr 13, 2014:
The question is not about understanding per se... It's more about the 'feel' of the text, some Britishisms, perfectly understandable to an American, will none the less, sound British, and vice versa. At the end of the day, it's the asker's decision; our role is to put forward, and justify, our suggestions, not to choose the answer :)
snupek (asker) Apr 13, 2014:
Ktoś przed chwilą poniżej pisał:
"In the US: the average Joe (and Jane), the average Joe and Flo"
....... a teraz ten ktoś się z tym nie zgadza.....
George BuLah (X) Apr 13, 2014:
consider then:
mid-income families/middle-income families
which is good and was actually offered by mike23 as well :), somewhere below ...

snupek (asker) Apr 13, 2014:
Joanna: Mr and Mrs Average is OK. It will work here perfectly as any reader will understand, either British or American or any other European.

Joanna Carroll Apr 13, 2014:
but if you want to keep the Polish reference, perhaps '...attract the custom of ordinary Poles/Polish families'...

The problem is that the flourish of source text doesn't always translates well even with the best combined efforts of a lot of great minds :)
snupek (asker) Apr 13, 2014:
I think I'll do the same :) Thx!
Joanna Carroll Apr 13, 2014:
well, I stand by my answer :)
snupek (asker) Apr 13, 2014:
że stolicą Polski jest... Ankara (sic!) A tak, fakt, to prawda :) niestety :(
snupek (asker) Apr 13, 2014:
Joanna, what sounds best to your Britishised ears then? :))
Joanna Carroll Apr 13, 2014:
popieram Jacek! if in doubt, make it neutral, that's my motto...
mike23 Apr 13, 2014:
of Mr and Mrs Kowalski / of average Mr and Mrs ...
Joanna Carroll Apr 13, 2014:
it may just be me but 'common people' has a slightly condescending sound to my Britishised ears...
George BuLah (X) Apr 13, 2014:

Tylko jaka forma: "the wallets of Kowalskis"? (z 's' na końcu?). Jeśli to 'nie brzmi' to zdecydowanie najbardziej mi odpowiada wersja "the wallets of common people".
George BuLah (X) Apr 13, 2014:
cotton-eye Joe ? :)

mike23 Apr 13, 2014:
Joanna Carroll Apr 13, 2014:
No właśnie wstałam i widzę prawie krwawą jatkę :)
George BuLah (X) Apr 13, 2014:
No, nieee, ja się tak nie bawie... Asia, miałaś dziś dłużej spać ;P :)))

mike23 Apr 13, 2014:
Mr and Mrs Average - that's it. Joanna nailed it
George BuLah (X) Apr 13, 2014:
"Smiths and Jonses" would be fine in the context

struggle/fight for Smiths and Jonses interest and trust

What do you think Mike?

mike23 Apr 13, 2014:
The Smiths? That's good
George BuLah (X) Apr 13, 2014:
to może... struggle for benefits from our company for Mr and Mrs Smith ?

mike23 Apr 13, 2014:
You can fight for the wallets of penny-pinching consumers/mid-income shoppers such as the Joneses.

or the wallets of common people

Wait a minute, does anyone know the financial standing of the Joneses? Are they low- or mid-income?
George BuLah (X) Apr 13, 2014:

mike23 Apr 13, 2014:
the Joneses - that's the only name that comes to mind; Jones - a generic name for one's neighbor
snupek (asker) Apr 13, 2014:
Głównie chodzi mi o to jak nazwać Kowalskich:
"...for the wallets of typical Kowalskis" ??
snupek (asker) Apr 13, 2014:
"struggle for better pay and benefits across the nation"
George BuLah (X) Apr 13, 2014:
O, nie! Ja na niego nie głosuję!

snupek (asker) Apr 13, 2014:
Nie wiem, a razie będzie o nie walczył ;)
George BuLah (X) Apr 13, 2014:
to on chce odebrać portfele Kowalskim?!

work hard to attract Mr and Mrs Average and their wallets

the Jones live in the US... We've got the Smiths in the UK but that reminds me more of the band than an average Joe in the street...

There is always going to be competition for consumer's spare cash, never more so when there is a downturn in the economy.

market to the average consumer

Examples:

If you want to market to the average consumer, you go through distributor channels... like Walmart or the like.

We understand the safety and product development concerns of companies that market to the average consumer.

Of course, there may be concerns about the accuracy of breath tests available on the market to the average consumer

Our company has a market to the average consumer, who taking into account very reasonable doubt is obviously not a professional surfer.

The firm also works with major financial services corporations advising them on how to assist and market to the average consumer

These characteristics also mean that the Geckskin team will be able to market to the average consumer.
