I agree that "as a mixer" only works with soft drinks, so no doubt that is what you were talking about...
But, I'm not sure what the problem is with "as a mixer", as I understand "mixer" the way you describe, and assumed that this was also what Edward meant!
Dictionaries say it's a non-alcoholic drink, like coke or fruit juice, that you combine with alcohol:
"A soft drink that can be mixed with alcohol" (Oxford)
"A drink without alcohol that you mix with an alcoholic drink" (Macmillan)
"A drink such as ginger ale, fruit juice, etc, used in preparing cocktails" (Collins)
Same in US:
"A drink (such as soda) that does not contain alcohol and that is used in an alcoholic mixed drink"

That's how I use the word and hear it used. You're saying that a "mixer" in UK EN means a mixed drink made with a combination of spirit and soft drink. That's not the usual meaning according to the dictionaries or my own experience, though I'm fairly sure I've heard it used like that. If so, you could say "in cocktails or mixers".
But whatever the Internet may say I don't think you normally refer to the spirit itself as a mixer, which is why I'm doubtful about "as a mixer" here.
