Spanish term

Ronda (forestal)

Spanish to English Other Forestry / Wood / Timber
This refers to the clearing of ground brush material around the base of trees as a fire prevention method.

Discussion

Gillian Holmes Nov 19, 2014:
Ah, well, if it's Honduras then the translation is firebreak, as I suggested, the same as in Nicaragua.
ATDavis80 (asker) Nov 19, 2014:
The context for the use of this word is a video on community forestry in Honduras, regarding a community who won its rights to manage its own forests. They are describing the forest management activities that they implement. "Ronda" appears as a forest fire prevention activity in the following context:

"En el tema de protección forestal se realizan
todas las acciones de prevención, rondas, vigilancia,
y cuando hay incendios, pues el combate de los mismo.
La línea de defensa, la ronda, es para tener un control,
porque si tenemos un incendio se nos complicaría más controlarlo.
Nos organizamos a través de una brigada,
en este caso yo soy el coordinador general.
Contamos con 3 vigilantes ambulantes. Cuando detectan algún incendio
me avisan y yo me muevo con la brigada, que está formada por 8 personas."

Yes, more context please Why are so many posters so niggardly with their context? I put it down to fear of disclosing too much privileged information. This term rings a bell with me, but my last forestry translation was a few years ago and without more asker input I'm not about to rummage through my old files to find out the exact term we used.
Henry Hinds Nov 18, 2014:
CONTEXT It is an absolute requirement.
philgoddard Nov 18, 2014:
Could we have several sentences of Spanish context, please?

Firebreak

I think this is what you're referring to. But context would be good, as Henry and Phil say.

agree neilmac : Ah, but check out my links below. In some cases it refers to a sort of brigade or similar group of operatives.

That would be logical. However, see the legal reference above on Proteccion forestal I guess the meaning depends on where the text is from, whether LA or Spain. Back to context again!

defensible space

If I understand your question, in San Diego this is the term used for the circle around a residence that is required to be kept clear of brush. See a picture at:
http://www.readysandiego.org/Resources/Widlfire Zone Cards C...

We have a lot of wildfires where I live, and we constantly hear announcements in the media about keeping the defensible space clear.

This procedure is also taught in landscape architecture classes that I have attended.

Of course, without context I could have misunderstood your question.

See examples of "defensible space":

Defensible space is essential to improve your home's chance of surviving a wildfire. See clearance ... San Diego County requires 50 feet of clearance in zone 1.

Forestry (brigade)

With so little context to go on, I might as well throw a battered old hat into the ring: In this link, it appears to refer to a kind of forestry brigade that helps put out fires: "una fuga de gas, ante lo cual se alertó a la comunidad, misma que se reunió en el lugar mientras la ronda comunitaria y la ronda forestal apagaban el fuego."
