English term

były odgradzane

Pepe Gancedo, who designed this golf course and a few other golf courses in Europe and America, developed an exceptional space development plan. Terrace fields, which for hundreds of years had been separated with low stone walls, were remained, forming steps up to the ocean shore.

had been being separated?

asia20002 (asker) Mar 25, 2015:
Poszłam na skróty (chyba pierwszy raz) i zmieniłam tekst źródłowy
Low stone walls, which for hundreds of years had been used to demarcate the former banana plantations, forming steps down...
Myślę jednak, że fence off oddaje sens.

Truer words were never spoken.
Andrzej Mierzejewski Mar 24, 2015:

Stone wall = kamienny mur/ek - IMO OK.
Frank Szmulowicz, Ph. D. Mar 24, 2015:
The terraces were fenced off with stone walls, not stone fences. To be fenced off, one does not need a picket fence. One can be psychologically fenced off from the world or reality too. Fenced off and stone wall often appear together
Malina9 Mar 24, 2015:
Do MacroJanus. Stone fence Slabo się gugluje. Wszędzie widze 'fences and stone walls.

Zjem obiad; będę myslałe trzeźwiej i dodam swoje 3 grosze:)
Frank Szmulowicz, Ph. D. Mar 24, 2015:
The tense depends on grammar, logic, and the way the sentence is structured. If at the time of the pronouncement the stone wall is already gone, one can say that the terraced fields had been fenced off for hundreds of years with stone walls; if the walls are still standing, one can say have been. Informally, one can say were fenced off too, because it connotes a state of affairs - a static thing.

Thanks. We could use "have been fenced off" or even "had been fenced off," depending on when they stopped being fenced off.

Dziękuję Jacku.
agree mike23 : Yes. I guess "had been fenced off" if it was prior to what the designer did, otherwise "were fenced off" or even "have been..." if it's until now.

There are stone fences. Besides, fenced off means to be separated, delineated with boundaries, bounded. Walled off carries the connotation of purposeful isolation like the Berlin Wall. One can find plenty of examples of "stone wall" and "fenced off."

Costa Adeje Golf Course, Tenerife

Just 5 kilometres from Playa de las Americas and built on the site of a former banana plantation, Costa Adeje was inaugurated in 1998. Designed by Pepe Gancedo this Par 72 golf course overlooks the sea and the island of Gomerada, its unusual layout respects the old farm terraces that slope down to the sea framed by the original dry stone walls which used to delimit the former banana plantation areas in which the terrain was divided back in those days. These have been restored to sum up the unique enclave of this golf course. - http://www.teetimes.info/spain/costa-adeje-golf-course-tener...
