W skrócie: "cut-to-length" polega na tym, że wstęga blachy (o wymiarach np.: szerokość 1250 mm, grubośc 0,5 mm) w postaci zwoju (np. http://www.nsteelsh.com/uploadfile/1/Alloy steel sheetcoil.j... jest cięta w poprzek na odcinki. Długość odcinków jest mierzona wzdłuż zwoju odpowiednio do zamówienia.

A tak w ogóle, to jeszcze nie cała wiedza mieści się w słownikach.

From a purely grammatical point of view, perhaps it would have helped if the term was phrased correctly, with an additional hyphen for the compound adjective: cut-to-length line. I think this is the main source of the problem: not a length line but a cut-to-length line. In order to cut something to length (cut to proper length), one must cut across the workpiece. I hope this ends the controversy.

One can cut crosswise for proper length (cut to length) or lengthwise for proper width.
Cut-to-length means to cut for proper length.

agree Crannmer : Na stronie Heinrich Georg GmbH Maschinenfabrik pod "cut to length" widnieją maszyny do ciecia poprzecznego. Zresztą na niemieckiej (czyli oryginalnej) wersji jednoznacznie stoi "Querteilanlagen".
