A knockout mouse or knock-out mouse is a genetically modified mouse in which researchers have inactivated, or "knocked out", an existing gene by replacing it or disrupting it with an artificial piece of DNA. The loss of gene activity often causes changes in a mouse's phenotype, which includes appearance, behavior and other observable physical and biochemical characteristics.

Note from asker:
Thank you all for advice and your suggestions. I've decided to go with the 'gene knockout', but since this suggestion of mine was approved of (and not proposed) by others, I'm not sure how am I supposed to arrange points here... |
*assign, not arrange.. Where's the coffee? ;) |

: 'gene knockout' seems to be a popular term; 'removal of a gene' is used too

Thank you, Michał. Knockout is a better choice, but check my links.

: in this context 'gene knockout' or 'gene inactivation' - yes, 'loss of a gene' - not

Discussion
@Kama_Wawa
1) Stick with knock-out alone, close the question, and not award points.
2) Stick with knock-out and my addition of inactivation and award me points, in which case I would change the glossary entry to knock-out (inactivation).
