Norwegian term

felles lunsj

Norwegian to English Bus/Financial Human Resources
In a list of instructions to staff: "Alle i driftsselskapet har ansvaret for å organisere felles lunsj på kontoret."

Are we talking about an employer-mandated routine that reduces non-productive time, or is this merely an occasional festive gathering?

Vedis Bjørndal Aug 19, 2015:
'Felles lunsj' is very common in Norway I agree with you Michele that some people eat at their desk, sometimes. But where I have worked and work, a 'felles lunsj' is what is preferred, of course depending on the type of work. It may also indicate a 'gathering' in some contexts, e.g. when the student year starts, at a seminar, etc. But this is part of instructions to staff, ...

Were you spying on me during my entire career in corporate America? (Actually, I typically left the building, as did my father whenever he could at his own job. As the twig is bent … And I had the good sense to marry a woman with the same proclivity.)
Michele Fauble Aug 19, 2015:
Felles lunsj I think the 'felles' indicates a gathering, i.e. same place, same time. Some places where I worked in Norway people would take out their 'matpakke' and eat at their desk whenever they wanted. Nothing really 'felles' about it then.

I believe this has to do with a daily routine at work which the employer wants to encourage to. I don't think it has anything to do with festivities.

Thanks, Vedis. I'm Leaning toward your suggestion (and my own initial thought), based on these examples: http://tinyurl.com/nzxz46c

lunch

No exact translation or US equivalent. "felles lunsj" or "felleslunsj" is simply lunch that a group would have together to become familiar with each other or simply to interact while taking a break. Food might be brought by each individual either for themselves or to share or, as implied here, employees would arrange jointly for food and share costs.
Example sentence:

Skal vi planlegge felles lunsj med det nye studentene?

Note from asker:
Thanks. We used to have potluck lunches like this at an office where I worked (my first encounter with octopus …) I'll hold off and see what else is proposed.
