Anyone know what this is? "Repoussoir" is normally a foil but that doesn't fit here. I've seen the other entries here for the same word but none seem appropriate.

Although I acknowledge that this may only convey a part of the meaning of the original (and we don't have enough context to be sure, though I suspect they are talking in very general terms anyway), this certainly seems to be the dedicated, 'official' term used in the US.

In the US, anyone with a disposable income is a potential customer or a prospect. It is the job of marketers to win him/her over as a consumer of specific products.
