English term

Project Kick-off versus Project Initiation

English Medical Medical (general)
What are the main differences between these two terms, "project kick-off" and "project initiation"? Are these two terms equivalent in meaning? Does a project kick-off meeting necessarily include project initiation?

Thanks in advance for your input

The term relates to a clinical trial meeting.

The context .. is everything. With the information you have given, I can only say they may be the same thing. But can you tell us how they are used? That may help understand if they are different.

They mean the same.

The meaning is the same, but the register is different.

"Kick-off" is an allusion to football. The game is initiated by kicking a stationary football toward the opposing team. The register is informal, vernacular.

"Initiation" is standard English.

Another idiomatic expression with the same meaning is "product launch".

Incidentally, there is nothing peculiar to the medical field in any of these expressions. That is, they have no special or distinct meaning in the medical context.
