German term

Restplätze

Non-PRO German to English Bus/Financial Tourism & Travel Billige Flüge Portal
"nur noch ein Restplatz für Ihren Flug!"

from a portal offering cheap flights and remaining seats.

Is "last minute" really appropriate, I have seen this on some sites but isn't it "remaining seats"?

Is there a standard translation? Thanks!

Nov 18, 2015 08:22: Steffen Walter changed "Field" from "Other" to "Bus/Financial"

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Björn Vrooman Nov 19, 2015:
Restplatz The Ryanair comparison is not applicable here:
http://www.exbir.de/veranstalterfluege

"Reiseveranstalter, die ein gewisses Flugkontingent bei einer Airline gekauft haben und nicht alle Sitzplätze auslasten können, bieten oftmals die Option von Restplätzen für einen Flug. Das heißt, sie bieten dem Fluggast kurz vor dem Abflugdatum die Möglichkeit, zu einem günstigeren Ticketpreis zu buchen. Dies ist insofern rentabel für den Reiseveranstalter, als dass er sonst für die leeren Plätze bezahlen muss."

"Restplätze" are not purchased from an airline.

A portal example Go to https://www.hotwire.com/air/index.jsp

Select 11/20-11/22

Type in New York to Honolulu.

You'll see "X left at XXX."
Björn Vrooman Nov 19, 2015:
@tropsehni Why don't you just look for a "portal offering cheap flights and remaining seats"?

http://www.wanderingearl.com/air-travel-tricks-ive-recently-...

-> "one seat left for this price"

Airline booking sites will say "hurry, only 1 seat left at this price!" but they don't say "the flight is R7 W1, the R fare costs $2 more than the W fare, there is no hurry." How can they know? This stuff is complicated.

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/travelbuzz/1335658-xx-seats-l...
-> XXX seats left at this price

So, I did as I usually do and went to the American website to book my flights. Under the flight I wanted, I noticed “1 Seat left,” so I naturally went through the booking process to ticket the reservation, considering the flights worked for me.

All sources I could dig up in relation to air travel (only looked for "1 seat," without adding a participle) said such portals say "seat left." So, I'm going to agree with Donald here. Other options can be equally valid, but I agree with Phil's comment.
Ramey Rieger (X) Nov 18, 2015:
There's also standby seats, but I would also say 'one remaining seat'.
H. C. Centner Nov 18, 2015:
I see absolutely no problem with remaining seats either. They certainly aren't free.
BrigitteHilgner Nov 18, 2015:
remaining seats would be my choice

Spare seats

Often the last 'Restplatz/plätze' has or have been been snapped up before the would-be traveller takes a chance.

It's enough to make anyone go 'spare'.
Example sentence:

What's a charter flight, and can they really challenge budget airlines ... There's often spare seats which they want to fill.

extra seats left

Most natural sounding option, in my opinion.

" If you need to find flights to Las Vegas on the same day, you can also buy a last minute ticket. If it is during a peak season, you will most likely have to go stand by. This means that if there are any extra seats left before take off, than you will be on your way to a business meeting."

Peer comment(s):

agree Lancashireman : Possibly even more "natural sounding": extra spare seats left remaining and available

Great idea, Andrew. Why not post that as an extra entry?
neutral Vere Barzilai : I'll sit on this, Lanciman!
