It is in a Norwegian saga that I am translating, that a girl at the estate is a "pleiesøster" and I am not sure what it means, because it is hard to find in the browser, and sometimes it suggests that it is some kind of a relative, and sometimes that it is a profession (nurse).
If this person is somebody's "pleiesøster", what is her position in the household?

The girl at the estate is being taken care of by the family of the estate. She is a foster child.

Nurse/caretaker
The traditional word for nurse in Norway is "søster", probably stemming from Catholic days.
