Discussion

Tony M Jan 16, 2016:
@ Asker Although the terms may be close synonyms in FR, I believe that in EN different terms may be needed depending on which field they are used in, i.e. film or TV production. To some extent, this reflects differences in media culture and working practices between FR and EN, with sometiems slightly different 'division of labour'
Fiona McBrearty (asker) Jan 16, 2016:
So Phil, would you like to submit that entry officially? Are you of the opinion then that "régie générale" is the same thing as "régie" and that we wouldn't make such a distinction in English?
philgoddard Jan 8, 2016:
Yes, there are several previous entries for this. Two of them are from you! It means production, which fits both of your contexts.
Chakib Roula Jan 8, 2016:
This question has already been asked and you can find it in the term search in proz.

central control

or control room as in a studio
Peer comment(s):

disagree Tony M : As I have already pointed out under my own suggestion, here it is NOT about the physical space; and furthermore, this would certainly NOT work for the film situation with 'régie générale'. Film does not use 'central control' in this way.

French term (edited): régie

(production) gallery

In the second instance, specifically referring to studio-based multi-camera TV production, the 'régie' is the production gallery (colloquially just 'the gallery') where vision mixing and other technical activities take place — either all in the same space, or in separate areas.

However, I am much less sure about the 'régie générale' in a film production context of your first example — I have not come across the term before in FR, and confess to being stumped as to what would be the equivalent in EN.

Actually, on re-reading this, I think Phil is right, and this answer is not actually relevant; your text is not talking about the physical space involved, as I had at first thought, but the part of the process: 'production' and 'editing' belong together in this sense.

So I would say that the word you need here is 'production' in BOTH instances.

As suggested in the KudoZ asking guidelines, you should always state what options you have considered (e.g. previous KudoZ entries!) and why you have rejected them, or the qualms you may have about them.

This helps us all to avoid wasting time re-inventing the wheel, as well as to better understand your reasoning.
Note from asker:
Thanks Tony. And thanks to Phil too: I KNOW there are existing entries for this term but I was not absolutely convinced they worked here...
