Italian term

ricambio della carica

Italian to English Tech/Engineering Mechanics / Mech Engineering Motori a combustione interna
La potenza che può essere sviluppata da un motore in cui si brucia combustibile con aria, è in ultima analisi limitata dalla sua capacità di aspirare aria, combinarla con il combustibile ed espellere i prodotti della combustione. Il processo di "ricambio della carica" acquista dunque un'importanza primaria. Il processo di ricambio della carica presenta poi caratteristiche sostanzialmente diverse nel caso del motore a quattro tempi rispetto al due tempi.

The text comes from an Italian textbook of mechanical engineering, I can't find any translation for "ricambio della carica", is anybody familiar with the subject?

charge exchange

If you do a search for "internal combustion engine" + "charge exchange" you get a fair number of hits. However, automotive is not my forte.

gas exchange (or possibly scavenging)

I'm not an expert by any means but this appears to be the correct phrase.

Example:
"A basic part of the cycle of an internal combustion engine is the supply of fresh air and removal of exhaust gases. This is the gas exchange process. Scavenging is the removal of exhaust gases by blowing in fresh air. Charging is the filling of the engine cylinder with a supply or charge of fresh air ready for compression."

Wikipedia:
"In automotive usage, scavenging is the process of pushing exhausted gas-charge out of the cylinder and drawing in a fresh draught of air or fuel/air mixture for the next cycle."

Also, see "The Internal-combustion Engine in Theory and Practice: Thermodynamics, fluid flow, performance" on google books
Example sentence:

In automotive usage, scavenging is the process of pushing exhausted gas-charge out of the cylinder and drawing in a fresh draught of air or fuel/air mixture for the next cycle
