Hi everyone,

I'm translating a shoe website (for sales to the public) and I am doubting the best word order for the descriptions. Below is an example, and most are very similar (variations in type of shoe, material, features, etc.):

Sandalia de hombre con cierre de velcro fabricado con pieles de ternera de primera calidad, blandas y flexibles

My question is which of the following would the best word order?

1. Men's velcro strap sandal made from premium quality calfskin, soft and flexible.
2. Men's velcro strap sandal made from soft and flexible premium quality calfskin.
3. Men's calfskin sandal with velcro strap. Premium quality, soft and flexible.
4. Men's sandal made from soft and flexible premium quality calfskin. With velcro strap.

Or any other permutation.....

With Wendy and Neil 'Hook and loop' makes me think of 'hook and eye', which is completely different.

I see nothing wrong with using velcro and my preference is for 2) with commas:
Men's velcro-strap sandal made from soft, flexible, premium quality calfskin.

My 2 cents I know what Velcro is. I've never heard of "hook and loop". So, I'd usually leave it as Velcro in a text addressed to the general public, simply because it'sthe most familar to me. And at first glance, all the Asker's options seem OK...

Sorry to join the discussion so late, but I hope this helps with your query regarding the use of the word Velcro. The usual way to refer to this type of fastener is "hook and loop", so you could say:

"men's sandals with hook and loop fastener, made from premium quality calfskin".

Your source text says velcro, so maybe it's safe to do so too. If you don't feel okay about it, there's always "touch" binding or fastening, I suppose.

@Kevin I think it's ok to use Velcro (velcro?) because what other word could you use? You can use sticky/adhesive tape instead of Sellotape but I really can't think of another way of saying Velcro, especially if it IS Velcro!

And depending on the style of the website, you could also omit the 'with' that comes before 'velcro strap'. That would also solve the problem of whether or not you have to write 'velcro' with a capital 'V', as it's a registered trade mark.

In option 4 I don't think any hyphens are necessary, though I admit that that's my personal preference. Because 'top quality' is not usually hyphened I don't see why 'premium quality' needs to be different.

Yes, Velcro should be capitalized, but the trade name is fiercely protected in the US at least. Most merchants avoid it.

I think you should feature the quality of the sandal and not the strap. In functional theory, the main points go at the beginning and end and the least important information goes in the middle.
