Spanish term
Monaguillo

Other
Ships, Sailing, Maritime
Part of the deck
I'm having great difficulty translating a text that was 'hidden' among others I have been sent. The translation is about safety on ships.
I've spent the past three days working on this awful text, doing a few questions at a time, but now I have to finish it. It's a checklist with over 200 questions, so there's not much context.
I've provided the questions that come before and after the one where the term appears.
- SE A EFECTUADO EL TEST DE FRENO DE MAQUINILLAS?
- LAS BITAS, MONAGUILLOS ETC SE ENCUENTRAN CORRECTAMENTE MANTENIDOS Y ALIGERADOS?
- EL EQUIPO DE FONDEO, ESTOPOR, TRINCAS, TENSORES ETC SE ENCUENTRAN EN BUEN ESTADO?
I've found a picture and I think 'monaguillo' might be a capstan, but I really don't know. I would appreciate your valuable help.

Tal como comentó Charles, hay un typo en mi sugerencia. Deberia ser "Pedestal fairlead". Asegurate de hacer el cambio antes de agregar el término al glosario.

pedestal roller fairlead / warping roller
I was just about post this (which took me ages to find out, may I say!), but Luis got in just before me. Anyway, here's a bit of corroboration.
This is the image that did the trick for me; the pedestal roller fairleads are marked:

Here's a page on them:

Obviously they look just like the monaguillos in the first source you cited. Your second source shows that these are rollers round which the mooring cables pass when being taken up by the warpends (cabirones). Their function is evidently to control the tension.

Thank you very much, Charles. I haven't seen such a lovely photo in ages! When I posted my question, I had already spent some time trying to find the answer but I realised that if I wanted to finish the list today I would need some help ;-) |
