Just to give a bit of a further background for the choice of words (legal use):
detained - temporary in nature and usually at a pre-trial stage (СИЗО или КПЗ, например)
imprisoned, jailed - тюрьма, колония и т.п. (more permanent in nature)
confined - could be in prison or even at home. The most important element is that the movement is restricted and the person is required to remain in one place.
I chose "being held" for two reasons: a) the source document does not specify what type of involuntary confinement is meant and b) to preserve the style of the original.

: Олег, а если в заключении?//Detained (юр. лексика) - это временное задержание/содержание под стражей. Т.к. по контексту мы не знаем, где содержится товарищ, то detained не совсем корректное употребление (а уж тем более в псих. больнице). Сорри.
