Deutsch term

Weiche

Deutsch > Englisch Technik Industrielle Technik Rolling mills
This one has me flummoxed. I am doing a translation on weight increase for a Garrett coil plant(I think that's what it is) in a rolling mill. One of the components that have to be installed and are specified is a WEICHE. According to my research Weich can mean switch, or junction plate, and a few other things. However, if someone can point out the EXACT and SPECIFIC word to be applied in the context of a rolling mill, I'd be very grateful. I see "shunt" and "segregator" have been used in engineering contexts - would those be suitable?

Discussion

Heidi Newby-Rose (asker) Feb 2, 2017:
@Hans-Jochen: Sure, it must be the correct term. However, the document is designed in such a way that a much longer word, or two words, could possibly throw out some of the text fields...but will have to squeeze it in then! :-). Thanks to everyone that contributed!
Hans-Jochen Trost Feb 2, 2017:
@Heidi I wouldn't worry about an "inelegant" term as long as it is the correct technical term. Here are references for "switch" and "distributing guide" in a rolling mill context:
Search at google.de for "Walzwerk Weiche Haspelanlage" yields:
Weiche -> switch
https://google.com/patents/EP0790084B1?cl=de
https://google.com/patents/CA2197284C?cl=en
Searching further at google.com for "rolling mill coil switch" yields
https://www.google.ch/patents/US2711809

Search at google.de for "walzanlage bandweiche" yields:
Bandweiche -> strip distributing guide
https://google.com/patents/WO2003004963A1?cl=de
https://google.com/patents/US7059161?cl=de

While I can't find a genuinely English language reference for "distributing guide" (the patent originators are apparently German), the steel business has a sufficient tradition in Germany that the engineers should pretty much know the technical terms in a foreign language they are dealing with.

distributing guide / distribution guide

That is what Ernst, Dictionary of Industrial Technology, indicates as the correct translation in case of rolling mills.

In case of railroads, the translation would be "shunt", "switch" (the most commonly used) or "points" (rarely used).

Well, you could combine my and the other answer and call it a "distribution point" IMO. A guide in the other answer is usually a guide rail that can swith between directions.
Note from asker:
Would "distributor" work? Because "distribution guide" is so inelegant...
Peer comment(s):

agree Hans-Jochen Trost : I found "switch" and "distribution guide" for "(Band-)Weiche" in matching German and US patents from SMS Group (SMS-Siamag and others).

points

If the mill is rolling on rails, leading to several positions, then the word would be 'points'.
Note from asker:
This seems to be a whole machine, though, a large device consisting of steel substructure, guide rollers, ad switch tube or pipe, all under the designation "Weiche"
Peer comment(s):

agree Dhananjay Rau : That is correct

disagree Alexander Schleber (X) : A rolling mill does not move on rails! It "rolls" or "mills" steel, usually into plates or profiles.

diverter valve

I worked on a pneumatic conveying system recently and their term for this was as above. It was used to move product between the processing line and a bypass line and you may be able to find something near to it in your application.
Note from asker:
It makes more sense to me in terms of what the machine looks like, but...
