French term

de nos côtes

Non-PRO French to English Other Cooking / Culinary menu
Hello,

This is on a menu "Soupe de poisson de nos côtes"

"Soup with fish caught on/off our shores/on local shores" sounds too clunky
Your suggestions are most welcome!

Thank you

Tony M Mar 23, 2017:
@ Asker Yes, it would indeed have helped to give us the ENTIRE menu item in the first place.
To start with, if you have only Emmental and croutons etc., I certainly wouldn't say 'with a serving of...' — to me, that's far too much prominence to give to a mere accompaniment; you could quite literally leave out any conjunction and just put a comma, as is often done in French too.
Surely your priority is to get the key part of the menu item expressed correctly, and then work around that?
Louisa Tchaicha (asker) Mar 23, 2017:
@Tony I should have made this clearer, I want to avoid using "with" here (for instance:"fish soup with locally caught fish" as after I have "accompagné d'emmental et de croutons etc", fish soup with a serving of...
Tony M Mar 22, 2017:
@ Asker We had something very similar to this just the other day: 'de nos pêcheurs'; I strongly recommend you check out that earlier answer, because of the important discussion around it.

neutral Tony M : Possibly; BUT it all depends on WHERE the restaurant is located; sometimes 'nos' can just mean 'French fishing fleet', or 'the coast of France' — but 'locally caught' would be a bit silly if this was right in the centre of the country!

neutral B D Finch : Sea fish, rather than river fish. Also, note Tony's comment re "local".
