Discussion

Tony M Jun 19, 2017:
@ BDF Yes, I know there are ALWAYS exceptions — but those ARE only exceptions and very specific and obvious ones too; there are also cases where either a plural or a singular can be used, but have different meanings. But pedantry aside, what I have given is a general rule of use to non-native speakers learning the language, as it is very important not to fall into the trap as non-native speakers of EN so often do of misinterpreting a text for this particular reason. It was a general comment I made in a terminology forum, not seeking to be a definitive treatise on EN usage.
B D Finch Jun 19, 2017:
@Tony Just a note that your comment "in EN a noun used to qualify another noun is always singular, even if the sense requires a plural," is not just incorrect, but becoming even more so. E.g. singles bar, ladies man, systems analysis.

Merci !
agree Tony M : Though do note it is perfectly possible this might be several tests, so of course 'essais' — remember that in EN a noun used to qualify another noun is always singular, even if the sense requires a plural.

neutral Tony M : The problem is, it may very well be several tests, hence this narrows it down unwisely.

compte-rendu d'essai

Although this is by no means as widespread, it is a term I regularly see in my FR > EN translations, so I am just including it here for the sake of completeness.

By the way, I favour 'essai', since in EN test report usually means 'a report on the testing (i.e. all the tests) carried out' — i.e. most of the time not just one single test.

...or of course 'essais' — remember that in EN a noun used to qualify another noun is always singular, even if the sense requires a plural. In very many industrial situations, testing will involve a whole group of tests, rather than just a single isolated one; only Asker's wider context may make it possible to tell which applies here.
