Polish term

mm

Polish to English Social Sciences Military / Defense
The following comes from a history of Poland in World War II. This specifically deals with events of September 5, 1939:

"W południe 5 września baterie 28. pal otworzyły ogień nękający na Strońsko, bateria 105 mm ostrzelała przejście na Warcie."

I believe I understand the first part: "At noon on Sept. 5th, batteries of the 28th Light Artillery Regiment opened harassing fire on Strońsko..." However, the last part is unclear because of the abbreviation. Perhaps: "A battery of the 105th...?????"

Discussion

Darius Saczuk Aug 4, 2017:
As I said, "mm" is a broader shortcut here. Have a good one!
Andrzej Mierzejewski Aug 4, 2017:
To be precise: mm = millimetre (millimeter in US EN). That should be an answer to such question.

Please wait for Timoshka's decision.

Have a nice weekend! :-)
Darius Saczuk Aug 4, 2017:
@Andrzej Timoshka asked a question specifically about "mm" , which is a shortcut for "105 mm gun", and not "bateria 105 mm". Bateria, obviously refers to more than one gun.
Andrzej Mierzejewski Aug 4, 2017:
@Dariusz Timoshka asked a rather imprecise question as s/he could not comprehend the text (no offence!). Dariusz's translation is good for a single gun. In my translation, I provided the meaning of "bateria 105 mm" for Polish artillery in September 1939 context. A single gun is not a battery of three or four guns - that's a significant difference. Yet, we don't know the actual number of guns in that battle. Sources may exist that include such data.
Darius Saczuk Aug 3, 2017:
My second reference clearly specifies that this is more than gun.
Darius Saczuk Aug 3, 2017:
@Andrzej Timoshka asked specifically about the term "mm" and not "bateria 105 mm". I don't see any need to duplicate my answer.
Andrzej Mierzejewski Aug 3, 2017:
@Timoshka You should have asked for "bateria 105 mm".

re: "harassing fire" nie jestem specjalistą, ale nie wydaje mi się, aby odpowiednikiem „ognia nękajacego” był "harassing fire" ... terminem tym jest raczej "suppressive fire"

a 105 mm gun battery

In the provided context, the"bateria 105 mm" meant more than just one gun. There were three or four guns in one battery depending on the unit organisation and actual conditions. A single gun with personnel, horses (or tractors), etc. was "działon".

I'd amend the answer: our (= Polish, not German) 105 mm gun battery - to make it clearer.
