Russian term

сожрать саму себя

Russian to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
I think it's about stopping democracy from self-destructing. Would appreciate any advice about this phrase. Here's the context:

- Смысл демократии во многом в том, чтобы она не сожрала саму себя, - сказал X. – И этим в том числе занимается моё ведомство.

Thanks Mikhail! Yes, the text is mainly gibberish. Thank you for your suggestion on this phrase.
Mikhail Kropotov Apr 6, 2018:
No wonder you're having trouble translating this. It's gibberish!

"Democracy is all about..." could work.
Sarah McDowell (asker) Apr 6, 2018:
чтобы не I was also going to write something like "the meaning of democracy is preventing it from self-destructing". The construction чтобы не сожрать here is implying that the action of self-destruction should be prevented.

I'm really stumped on this one and how to make it sound really good. Anybody have some suggestions please?
Sarah McDowell (asker) Apr 6, 2018:
Thanks for all your suggestions! Still need advice I need a bit of help coming up with the overall sentence.

I was going to say something like "The meaning of democracy is to not devour itself". I'm not sure of it. I'm a bit unsure of the whole phrase чтобы она не сожрала саму себя.
Mikhail Kropotov Mar 22, 2018:
'Implode' could be an option if the process happens to happen abruptly.
Araks Mnatsakanyan Mar 22, 2018:
I agree with Mikhail Kropotov that the democracy may "consume or devour itself" like in the famous expression: "The revolution devours its children". Also, John Adams quotes can be helpful: "Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide".

The Misha Mar 21, 2018:
Or gobble/tear itself up Or maybe even shoot itself in the foot, which would be a tad more idiomatic but not as radical as devouring itself.
Mikhail Kropotov Mar 21, 2018:
Consume or devour itself would be my choices. Сожрать is not low-register in this case, though the correct form found in dictionaries is пожирать: https://www.multitran.ru/c/m.exe?l1=2&l2=1&s=

Self-destuction (or the verb form destroy itself) seems to be a better option than the literal eating itself.

I would say:
cease to exist
destory (ruin) itself might work as well

== BEGIN QUOTE ==

In August 1791, thousands of slaves rose up in Saint Domingue, led by a voodoo high priest named Boukman, in a war for their freedom. Over the next decade, the revolt destroyed the power of white planters and their estates and laid waste to the French colony. Amidst the violence, a group of charismatic black leaders emerged. The most famous was the former slave Toussaint L’Ouverture. Over more than a decade, the rebellious slaves defeated invading armies from France, England, and Spain. The black leadership eventually turned against itself in a struggle for control of the revolution. Tragically betrayed, Toussaint would eventually die in a French prison, and his lieutenant, Jean-Jacques Dessalines, would declare the creation of an independent Haiti in 1804. The final section of this outline turns to the significance of the Haitian Revolution for all of the Americas.
