Context? Is this 'free area' mentioned anywhere else in your document? If so, I'd very much like to know if there are any figures expressed anywhere for it, and if so, in what units they are expressed?

We're talking here about the proportion of 'holes' to 'metal' — as such, it connotes 'cross-sectional area', which is the dedicated term applied in other related fields e.g. filtration.
