Essential context is also whether we are dealing with criminal or civil law here as the term would translate quite differently in each case.

Hi Ana Agree with AllegroTrans about having additional context. Having said that I know that the crime of "captación illegal" [de bienes/dinero] has an exact equivalent in US English: Illegal reception. The perfect example of this crime is the pyramid schemes (although is no limited to just that anymore.
