GL + number

English Law/Patents Government / Politics Birth certificate
Do you know if "GL + number" at the top of a birth certificate is part of the reference of the certificate or if it has an actual meaning.

Thank you

Many thanks Alison. I was just wondering if I wasn't missing something here. This is very clear and helpful. Thanks again.

@Anne-Lise - GL is a prefix code with no meaning A Guide to Birth Certificates
Serial numbers
Each certificate is printed with a unique serial number comprising a one to three letter prefix code and up to six digits.

Each birth certificate contains a unique reference number, comprised of letters and numbers. This is an anti-fraud measure, designed to enable it to be possible if need be to tell where the certificate was issued from, and to which register entry it relates. Since each certificate has a unique number, if more than one certificate is issued for the same entry then they will have different serial numbers.

The forms are pre-printed with serial numbers, for example QBN 004298, and no two forms share the same serial number.

Birth certificate number
Please enter the printed, unique serial number (usually printed in red at the top or bottom of the form)

The "GL" number is the birth certificate number, the other one is the NHS number. Incidentally, if you contact your GP you may find that they just arrange for another NHS number to be issued - if memory serves, it will be about just a number with no letters and begins with a 4. I got this a lot from my time in an AFCO. Good luck with your application by the way!

Unnecessary pique "without others needing to do the research for you"
Some of us enjoy researching for others and is it not what Kudoz are for ?
Anne-Lise Simond (asker) Aug 4, 2018:
Context: country Sorry, it's a birth certificate from UK
AllegroTrans Aug 4, 2018:
Essential context missing Which country is this from? Have you tried Google image search and looked at sample birth certificates? This might answer your question without others needing to do the research for you
