: I'm not sure it means the coating itself. I think the idea here is to improve the "quality of the grip" or "stick-ability" for the next coat. ¡Saludos MPGS!

: Viéndolo otra vez, tu opción tal vez sea la más clara, en un registro coloquial. Dependerá del registro y el nivel del test..., pero me parece válido también. :-)

Thanks John. In fact, your idea would normally be perfect to describe that "scratching", but in this context, they're using "key" to mean the "grippiness" (¡válgame!) rather than the actual scratches or act of scratching, if you see what I mean.

A mi me parece que es esto. Puede ser un enjarre acabado fino. O los enjarres gruesos para posteriormente revestirlos con otros productos o terminados finos. Incluso el enjarre grueso se usa como base para revestir con mosaico, azulejo o piedras y acabados finos.
