@ Chris Here, 'virage' = 'barring' — turning soemthing a lot slower than its normal operating speed for checking, etc.

So it would clearly need an extra reduction gear(box) to achieve this much slower speed.

I believe "virage" may refer to an auxiliary drive, possibly going off at an angle. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBemBuOrWlY. Your GV is the "groupe virage" and the "réducteur" is the gearbox.
