Spanish term

en las cuatro consumar

Spanish to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature poesía barroca española - JÁCARA NUEVA DE LA ZANGARILLEJA
My madness continues! Not quite sure what this means. Thank you in advance for your help!

De las cinco reglas,
solo la zangarilleja
aprendió a multiplicar,
¡zarandillo y andar!

Aunque pudo por discreta
la zangarilleja
**en las cuatro consumar,**
¡zarandillo y andar!

A escribir, si por tener
la zangarilleja
pluma a comer y cenar,
¡zarandillo y andar!
Proposed translations (English)
3 +1 she was able to carry out all the four rules

Discussion

Cecilia Gowar Jul 2, 2019:
Thanks Lydia! Yes, that is how I understand it.
Lydia De Jorge (asker) Jul 2, 2019:
@Cecilia I think you hit the nail on the head! She was TAUGHT to multiply (many connotations here) while she learned the other four on her own.
Cecilia Gowar Jul 2, 2019:
I believe she managed to master the other four, thanks to her good judgement.
I based this interpretation on the meanings of:
Consumar: 1. tr. Llevar a cabo totalmente algo. Consumar la redención del género humano. Consumar un sacrificio, un crimen.
and ¨discreción¨: 1. f. Sensatez para formar juicio y tacto para hablar u obrar.

2. f. Don de expresarse con agudeza, ingenio y oportunidad.
Both taken from the RAE.
Also, the word ¨discreto¨ derives from the latin word for ¨discerning¨ (also RAE).
Juan Jacob Jul 2, 2019:
@Lydia Hum... opino que NO las aprendió, por lo que es.
Esperemos.
Lydia De Jorge (asker) Jul 2, 2019:
@Juan Jacob De acuerdo. Pienso que aprendió las otras 4 'discretamente'. A ver si aparecen otras ideas. Gracias y saludos!
Juan Jacob Jul 1, 2019:
Supongo que significa que pudo haber aprendido las otras 4 reglas, pero que no lo hizo por su condición de zangarilleja. [Dios, qué palabras... suerte]. Esperemos más opiniones.

she was able to carry out all the four rules

However, the play on word "con sumar", i.e., "with addition" is a play on words hard, if not impossible to translate.

In other words, without further context, I understand she could add, subtract, multiply and divide. (She probably was able to handle some money)

As for the fifth one, writing, that was thanks to the "pen" (pork) she would eat for lunch and dinner..., i.e., most likely she was illiterate, (?) as noted in your other question.

Good luck!

Consummation?

This could maybe be used, in case this zangarilleja (as I suppose) has anything to do with "lenocidio, casa de", as she would be able to "add" more money to her purse, with every "con summation"... (This may be stretching it, but I would not rule out this nuance and play on words...)

You're welcome, Lydia. Glad to be of help, and glad to be able to do so..., in understanding some of these baroque conundrums... ;-)
Note from asker:
Consummation is definitely worth exploring. Thanks!
Peer comment(s):

agree Cecilia Gowar : Although I would say ¨she could accomplish all four¨.

Thank you very much, Cecilia. :-) Yes, your wording would be better. The challenge is to find something where "accomplish" "con-summate" may read with similar cleverness... ;-)
Something went wrong...
