: More specifically average either be a noun (la moyenne) or an adjective (le/la/les .... moyen/nne/s) while mean is a noun.

: And 'average' (unlike 'mean') can also be a verb! 'Median' is of course a quite different concept.

: To be more specific, mean, median and mode are all "averages" to a statistician, but to a lay-person "the average" = "the mean".
