Japanese to English Bus/Financial Mining & Minerals / Gems Coal mining terminology
I am working on an academic paper about technological innovations leading to increased coal production in Japans mines in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

My questions has to do with a part of a coalmine called “片磐坑道”. It appears in the following passage.

Does anyone know what this refers to?

Thank you.

Butt level

It would seem to be 'butt level,' as defined by by the JIS Kogyoyo Daijiten, 1982 edition (I know it's old, but still serviceable). It appears to mean drilling a vertical or angular shaft parallel to the direction of the coal seam, and of a suitable width. The JIS explanation (below) seems to be roughly analogous to Cinefil's explanation.
