Es una zona para la vigilancia de pacientes o/y tratamiento de procesos
agudos en los que se prevé una resolución en un corto periodo de tiempo, que se recomienda, como máximo, sea de unas doce horas.

The definition given by patinba is correct but he was mislead by "observación"; sillones are not actually observation units as such but more so treatment rooms where the patient is sitted rather than put on a bed -and where the patient can be "observed" for a short period of time.
