Los frenillos labiales tanto superior como inferior atraviesan, en sentido anteroposterior, la cresta alveolar en los bebés/niños todavía desdentados... Con la erupción de la dentición temporal y el crecimiento maxilar, se van "arrastrando" hasta situarse en posición más GINGIVAL con respecto a las piezas dentarias (se desplaza hacia arriba en el caso del frenillo labial superior PERO hacia abajo en el caso del homólogo inferior)... Aquí se entiende que ese arrastre no ha ocurrido, con lo cual el frenillo persiste en su posición interincisiva incluso tras la erupción dentaría, probablemente dejando un diastema entre los dientes correspondientes. Sería incluso más correcto decir: persistent insertion in the interincisive region.
