Discussion

Michael Martin, MA Apr 8, 2020:
Let me get back to the 'expert' issue I have no need to avoid the word 'expert'; it simply doesn't spring to mind considering that operating 'LNG dispensers' doesn't seem to require a high-level skills set. 'Expert' sounds like a big word for something that could easily just be 'show up and get your certificate' type of training.
Johannes Gleim Apr 7, 2020:
@ Adrian the subject for "Heimat- und Sachkunde" is different from this question and not applicable acc. MHO. It refers to secondery education in schools.
The best answer is not the choosen one, but local history and studies, and general knowledge.

We are not dealing with secondary education but with practices on site.
Chris Pr Apr 7, 2020:
A new lexical world record, perhaps,.. ...in avoiding use of the word "expert"?

"...if you have Sachkunde, you know a thing or two about a given topic or know what you're talking about..."
Michael Martin, MA Apr 5, 2020:
The way I see it , if you have Sachkunde, you know a thing or two about a given topic or know what you're talking about. Whether or not that amounts to specialized knowledge is a different question: the term is silent about that.
Johannes Gleim Apr 4, 2020:
I would say to communicate or teach expert knowledge.

theorectical instruction/training

"Those attending will receive a certificate for participating in theoretical (content) instruction."

Vermittlung means instruction and Sachkunde suggests this is instruction in the theory, not hands-on instruction
Peer comment(s):

agree Adrian MM. : Indeed. It is Sach- & not Fachkunde, though a nasty teacher of my relatives in Vienna had been labelled 'zwar sach- und fachkundig' by a *polite fellow teacher* https://eng.proz.com/kudoz/german-to-english/education-pedag...

Yes, fachkundig is narrower than sachkundig. But I wouldn't go as far as to say you can't be both unless fachkundig is your relatives' code for being narrrow-minded and sachkundig is code for holding a broader perspective.

Thanks, Schtroumpf!
neutral Johannes Gleim : I am not confident that teaching instructions is suffient for professionals or practitioners. This looks more like briefing, instruction or training. A practioner needs exercises, praxis and practise.

I am afraid, you've lost me there..Also, nobody was talking about 'Heimatkunde' until you dragged it into the discussion without need.
neutral Chris Pr : "Theoretical" is plain incorrect: https://dict.leo.org/german-english/sachkunde

True, Sachkunde is often used synonymously with Fachkunde. But dictionaries only provide broad general definitions that are often insufficient to cover contextual nuances. I use them to confirm basic meaning but won't rely on them for much else.

Fachkunde vs. Sachkunde
