Discussion

Tony M Jul 10, 2020:
@ Phil Strictly speaking, in the religious context it translates as 'stations of the Cross' — which might give a clue as to its intended meaning here.
philgoddard Jul 10, 2020:
It's religious terminology, meaning way of the cross. I wonder it's a set of procedures, in the sense of a route to be followed.

definition of work package boundaries

I have also found 'work breakdown structure', but that seems to be a proprietary term coined by one software publisher.

I am 100% sure of what the term means, but I have not had the time to do the further research (that Asker is I'm sure more than capable of doing) in order to confirm the most widespread term used in EN — whence my modest confidence rating, for what is only a suggestion, as an avenue for further research.

Perhaps the fact that there are so few instances out there on the 'Net is indicative of the rather fanciful, tenuous nature of this metaphor.
If we imagine Christ's final journey as a line bounding "Work Package X", then the stations of the Cross along the way could be thought of as representing the interface points with other Work Packages. Just as in fact Christ in many places interacts with others along his route.
It's a bit « tiré par les cheveux » as we might say!

agree philgoddard : I don't think you should be disagreeing with other people's answers when you haven't provided any evidence for your own.//Sorry, I didn't see your reference entry, so I'm agreeing. I still don't really see why it's called a chemin de croix, though.

Thanks, Phil! I think it defines 'limit points', just as the Stations of the Cross define the key 'boundaries' along Christ's path

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks Tony. As I thought a "definition of boundaries" is the same as a "delimitation" and both of them can be a form of document, in the end I opted for a hybrid between your answer and Johannes's: delimitation of work packages."

path through the connecting points; path through the nodes

It is about an electrical cabinet, which is a junction box.
"Connecting points" describes in particular the strictly mechanical standpoint. "Nodes" describes the network theory (and mathematical network theory) standpoint.

disagree Tony M : Plse see refs. provided for this term, which relates to defining where the work package boundaries are located. / As I'm 100% sure your answer is wrong (based on my years of experience in the field) BUT I am not 100% sure of my suggested term in EN

(Er, how is it that you don't rate your answer a "5" yet you feel compelled to append a "disagree" rating, rather than "neutral", to my answer? One rarely sees this.)

delimitation of lots

The necessity to continuously upgrade products and reduce costs, means that in, for example, the mechanical engineering and electronics industries, production lots are created in order to plan finished products and important semi-finished parts. Production lot planning enables you to determine the costs for a product in relation to a certain change status in the preliminary planning stage, that is, before the sales order has been received.

Lot size
There are different types of lot sizes. A production lot size, for example, determines the quantity of material manufactured as the result of one setup.
https://help.sap.com/saphelp_plc100/helpdata/en/5b/dc7a5528c...

The second requirement is that production order responding to the condition of production line should be dispatched at the necessary timing. Especially for small volume of production lot, short dispatching cycle of production order is required.
:
Example of the MSPS
The MSPS of programmable logic controller (PLC) and temperature controller are shown below. These products consist of PCB (electronic components mounted on PWB), connector for external interface (terminal board), power supply unit, and chassis. Elemental works required are solder coating, components installation, soldering, assembly, and inspection. …
Production line of PLC consist of multiple production cells comprised of function unitis corresponding to each work as shown in Figure 7. …

4.8.1 Pre-Construction Phase
The pre-construction phase has been completed under EQPB permit PEA-247-15. Activities included identification of a contractor, delimitation of lot boundaries (survey of lot), develop and implement required soil erosion measures, and securing source of fill material.

(also called batch production), lot size must be reduced to shorten processing time.

The Project for Improvement of East-West Arterial Road and Community Road in Northern Area of Kabul (i)
2TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
:
Concrete under acceptance shall be notionally divided into lots for the purpose of sampling, before commencement of work. The delimitation of lots shall be determined by the following:
(i)No individual lot shall be more than 30 cum. in volume
(ii)At least one specimen forming an item of the sample representing the lot shall be taken from concrete of the same grade and mix proportions cast on any day.
(iii)Different grades of mixes of concrete shall be divided into separate lots.
(iv)Concrete of a lot shall be used in the same identifiable component of the bridge.

My proposal "delimitation of lots (works, jobs, etc.)" may not be standardized but is comprehensible in industrial context.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : Your refs relate to 'lots' used in a different sense; and here it is not 'the action of delimiting', but rather some document that defines what these limits are.

A kind and much-missed contributor to this forum has provided the following two references which appear to explain the actual meaning of this term:

Some clues for deciphering 'chemin de croix'

[1] eigentlich und bildlich: die Kreuzung verschiedener Wege an einer Stelle; die Stelle, an der sich verschiedene Wege gabeln
https://de.wiktionary.org/wiki/Kreuzweg
translated: 1] actually and figuratively: the crossing of different paths at one place; the place where different paths fork.

The Stations of the Cross or the Way of the Cross, also known as the Way of Sorrows or the Via Crucis, …

May describe a painful approach or subdivision of workflow or into lots.
