French term

version de courtoisie

French to English Medical Medical: Health Care
These three words occur on their own in the header of a public health document I'm translating into English. It seems like a generic header that I'm currently translating as "advance copy" but I'd like to know if there's a precise definition.

Discussion

B D Finch Sep 7, 2020:
@Drmanu49 I suppose may depend upon the policy or legal status of the source document. The Asker would need to judge that or may need to ask the client. However, the phrase used in the ST doesn't seem, to me, to fit your interpretation.
Drmanu49 Sep 7, 2020:
I don't think that is the case. I believe it is only a version provided by the agency to people who might not necessarily have access to the document.
B D Finch Sep 7, 2020:
@Suzie & Asker It means that it is a version that is not valid in law, but that is provided for the convenience of those who want to read the document in a different language or in summary form etc.
Luigi Benetton (asker) Sep 7, 2020:
That could be it The French version has already been published on the client's website and these words (likely) won't be included.
Suzie Withers Sep 7, 2020:
Would it be something like "Copy for information only" or something? Do you know it's an advance copy?

"The Global Fund sent Francophone countries their allocation letters for 2020-2022 in English and French in December 2019. For some Francophone countries, such as Chad or Senegal, the French letterhead read “version de courtoisie, seule la version anglaise fait foi” or “la version anglaise prevaut,” which the GFO understands to mean “courtesy version, the English version is considered legally binding”. The letters bear the signature of Marc Edington, the Head of the Grant Management Division."

Note from asker:
This is a good answer, but I'm going with the more literal (and shorter) "courtesy version." Thanks for your input, though. I can easily imagine instances where your answer would work better.
