neilmac Sep 17, 2020:
@Neil I think it may be just another manager-speak buzzword metaphorical use of "ecosystem" to refer to their processes, because it comes across more touchy-feely and concerned. And I agree with your take - it means using all the bits of the fish, not chucking anything away (shudder)... :)
Neil Ashby Sep 16, 2020:
IMO, "ecosystem" would only apply if used as a fancy synonym for 'environment' to talk about the industry as a whole, and as Sonia has just confirmed, we're not.

"valorización" seems more like "aprovechamiento" to me.

>> "resource usage/utilization optimization system"?
Sonia Maria (asker) Sep 16, 2020:
The document is a Non-financial information statement of a group of companies that belong to the food canning industry. There is one section about how to use raw materials and by-products in the production process in the most efficient way. ("valorización de la materia prima"). The section is about the system used by the company (sistema de valorización total) based on the principles and guidelines of circular economy.
Althea Draper Sep 16, 2020:
I think Sara's translation fits best. If you look at these two references, both refer to a 'valorisation ecosystem'.

https://www.eitfood.eu/media/documents/EIT_Food_Inauguration...

This one refers to side-stream valorisation in the UK food industry sector, (page 133) indicating the need for "understanding and developing the waste valorisation ecosystem"

This one is a research paper on "investigations [are] nearing completion to determine the best FE&Bs processing and valorisation ‘ecosystem’ that approaches viable full circular economy" (FE&Bs = Food Excess and By-products).

Sonia, is your text discussing a machine/system used in a specific processing plant or just generalising about the industry?
Sara Fairen Sep 16, 2020:
@Ana,

That is how I see it too. However, it might just be a literal translation of the English "valorization ecosystem", whatever that means...

• To describe the marine biotechnology and biomass valorization ecosystem in Quebec and its perspectives.
Ana Vozone Sep 16, 2020:
@Sara Precisely, that is my "interpretation" and hence my suggestion. :)
Sara Fairen Sep 16, 2020:
I wonder whether it means something similar to this entry - to make the most of any by-product

(zero waste) / (recovery) ecosystem

In the sense of using resources wisely... making full use of what the product can give, with no waste.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Althea Draper : Not 'recovery ecosystem' - all of the links to this in your reference are for recovery from substance abuse! Zero waste is closer but in theory applies to more than just raw material use (as referred to here) but to all waste produced by the factories.

a recycling-driven ecosystem

- rather than a 'sustainable' one of 'valorisation'.

neutral Neil Ashby : I wouldn't fancy eating recycled fish, sounds like a euphemism for "eating the proverbial"!

ecological restoration/ fish habit restoration

Ecological restoration, the process of repairing sites in nature whose biological communities (that is, interacting groups of various species in a common location) and ecosystems have been degraded or destroyed.

Example sentence:

We review fish habitat destruction in the Lake Huron-to-Lake Erie corridor (HEC).

We list questions that fish habitat restoration research in the HEC should address.

valorisation system (ecosystem)

I wasn’t going to post an answer because I thought the discussion was clear already - but just in case it isn’t, here goes my contribution.
I believe this is a reference to the so-called “valorisation/valorization system” (or ecosystem, depending on the writer), generally used in the context of waste management, but in this case referring to food by-products - similar to the food excess and by-products in Althea’s link.
https://eprints.usq.edu.au/37273/
Horticultural food producers and processors typically have Food Excess and By-products (FE&Bs) generated during their operations, the value of which is underutilised. FE&Bs still often end up in landfill, improperly composted, or given away as animal feed, despite there being no shortage of technical strategies available to deal with this issue. FE&Bs are a rich source of water, bioactive compounds and fibre and could be used to produce high value nutritional and food products, as well as structural enhancements for composite material systems, including packaging […]determine the best FE&Bs processing and valorisation ‘ecosystem’ that approaches viable full circular economy by overcoming these hurdles.

Sustainable waste management through synergistic utilisation of commercial and domestic organic waste for efficient resource recovery and valorisation in the UK

A new waste law aimed at accelerating the transition to a circular economy […]to tackle together the current critical issues of the waste collection, treatment and valorisation system, also to remain in line with the new objectives proposed by the four European directives on the circular economy.

All of this is related to the idea of circular economy, and that’s why I liked Ana’s suggestion of “zero waste” ecosystem.

Crucially, ecosystem here just means "system". And the "value" created is not about promotion/enhancement, but optimal use of resources
