English term

brass sounder

Homework / test English to Polish Other Telecom(munications)
wyrażenie pochodzi z książki Upstream poziom C2, str 8. Tekst jest o kodzie Morse'a.

Akapit brzmi tak:
Morse telegraphy may seem like a quaint anachronism, with its brass sounder and key operated by the world's most basic tool, the human finger. However, it is sometimes vital to worldwide communications. When the Mexico City earthquake 30 occurred in 1985 and all the power went off, calls for help were transmitted in Morse by an amateur radio operator. "We see the Morse code as a dying art, but we refuse to let it die completely," says Major General Leo M Childs, the US Army's Chief Signal Officer. "Newer isn't always better.

Summary

Telegraph sounder used for the reception of telegraph messages transmitted by Morse code.

Telegraph signals were transmitted by an operator who depressd a key to complete an electric circuit and transmit current along the telegraph line. Releasing the key broke the circuit and cut off the current. Letters and numbers were represented by a sequence of short current pulses ('dots') and long current pulses ('dashes'), transmitted according to a defined code. The most widely used code was generally known as "Morse code".

At the receiving end of the telegraph line, the incoming current pulses passed to the receiving instrument, or 'sounder'. Two vertical wire coils were energised by the received pulses, causing the metal arm across the top of the coils to move up and down.

Description (Brief)

Telegraph sounders convert electrical pulses into audible sounds and are used to receive Morse code messages. The message travels as a series of electrical pulses through a wire. Short pulses make a dot, slightly longer pulses make a dash. The sequence of dots and dashes represent letters and numbers. The pulses energize the sounder’s electromagnets which move a lever-arm. The arm makes a loud “click” when it strikes a crossbar and the operator translates the pattern of sounds into the original language. This sounder from Manhattan Electric Supply Company is rated at 150 Ohms resistance. That indicates the unit was intended for so-called "mainline" service over long distances.
