Thank you philgoddard. :) And true about context. Although this would be quite a 'standard' translation which should fit most contexts. See also the second example sentence I gave which I chose due to context being similar (I assume!!).

"They began to embrace conformism (conformity) purely for their own benefit."

'Benefit' is a bit broader than 'gain'. That's appropriate here because 'Vorteil' could be less tangible or less obvious than 'gain.'

Query: nur noch as routine strengthener of 'nur' or qualifies der eigenen Vorteilsnahme.

If for instance a conformist harms someone else to gain a personal advantage he will suffer from remorse only if he believes that many others would also feel bad about the harmful action.
