Spanish term

ventriculostomía

Spanish to English Medical Medical: Cardiology
OK, so I'm reviewing a scientific article written in English by a non-native speaker (Spanish native). The word they use is "ventriculostomy". The topic is heart surgery. I've only ever seen this word referring to neurosurgery. The doctor who wrote the article says:

"He estado mirando y tampoco veo en inglés como decirlo. En español si se usa en relación a la cirugía cardíaca. Es abrir el ventrículo para poder acceder al interior y hacer desde ahí el cierre de algún defecto cardíaco. La cicatriz de la ventriculostomía puede inducir a arritmias.

Puede usarse en cirugías del cierre del ventricular septal defect, en cirugías de la tetralogía de Fallot...."

Is this word correct for both heart surgery and neurosurgery, used interchangeably? Or is there a mistake somewhere?

Context: "...instead of carrying out a definitive corrective surgery, which is delayed until a later stage to avoid the secondary effects of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and the risk of the ventriculostomy." ("and the risk of the" has not yet been corrected).

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Discussion

Anne Schulz Nov 24, 2020:
I have seen this inaccurracy of -stomy vs. -tomy exists in English (and German, for that matter) as well. While the original definitions are as mentioned by Chema, language use meanwhile is such that even scientific reports may use -stomy instead of -tomy.

Ventriculotomy (cardiac)

A ventriculotomy is a heart surgery that involves an incision into one or both ventricles. It is a component of many heart surgeries, including infarctectomy and many congenital heart defect surgeries. In the long-term, a prior ventriculotomy can increase the risk of ventricular arrhythmia. Right ventriculotomy often causes right bundle branch block if it is extensive. Modern congenital surgery techniques have reduced the long-term effects of ventriculotomy and its repair.

This looks promising.

Abstract
Background: The optimal management of tetralogy of Fallot is still under debate, particularly with respect to surgical approach and the age of operation.

--------------------

Residual narrowing could either be due to a restrictive pulmonary valve or hypoplasia of the right ventricular outflow tract. If the pulmonary valve was stenotic but the infundibular obstruction had been successfully relieved, we incised the annulus without ventriculotomy or by limiting the ventriculotomy to 3–5 mm, just enough to place a patch to effectively enlarge the annulus. In cases where the outflow tract was still obstructed (due to hypoplasia rather than hypertrophy of the outflow tract), we felt that a right ventriculotomy was necessary and should be extended at least a few millimetres beyond the length of the infundibular septum.

Arrhythmias are the second most common cause of complications after ventricular failure in adult congenital heart disease patients. They are responsible for approximately 20% of deaths, which generally occur in the form of sudden death [5]. They result from anatomical anomalies or the sequelae of surgery (ventriculotomy, atriotomy, patches). They are also associated with ventricular failure and corrections performed at a late age.
