Portuguese term

século xvm

Portuguese to English Social Sciences History slave trade
This is from a book on the slave trade and the chapter this is taken from deals mainly with the 17th century, so I assume xvm means 17th but I need to be certain. Thanks for your help!

Proposed translations (English)
3 +6 XVIII 18th century

Discussion

Mario Freitas Feb 10, 2021:
OCR error This is likely an OCR error converting a PDF file into a DOC (iii = m). I think Douglas is right. And there will likely be other similar errors in the document.
Simona de Logu (asker) Feb 10, 2021:
I know it isn't a Roman numeral. Very confusing. It might be a typo, but when I google I find many references to seculo xvm in other texts so it seems that it does exist. Just don't know what kind of number it is.
Mark Robertson Feb 10, 2021:
XVM? 17 in Roman numerals is XVII. It appears therefore that the m in XVM is a typo. M in Roman numerals = 1,000, however the configuration XVM is not a valid number in Roman numerals. There only one correct configurations of M, V and X, which is MXV (1015).

XVIII 18th century

I agree with Bruno aboiut it being a typo but I believe the m (with three legs) is more likely to be iii

XVII

Peer comments on this reference comment:
