This is from a book on the slave trade and the chapter this is taken from deals mainly with the 17th century, so I assume xvm means 17th but I need to be certain. Thanks for your help!

: Deve ser realmente um erro de digitação, ocorrendo a troca de "II" por um M. O M, precedido de uma letra como C, seria subtraído do valor equivalente.
