French term

corde des têtes des pistons

French to English Tech/Engineering Ships, Sailing, Maritime
This appears in a document about an engine failure of a ship. One of the things the expert has to do is: prélever et analyser les dépôts présents à la corde des têtes des pistons

I'm OK with piston heads but stuck with "corde"
Proposed translations (English)
3 -1 piston head cord

Discussion

florence metzger Mar 7, 2021:
ou peut être les gorges des segments
philgoddard Mar 2, 2021:
I wondered if "la corde" was a mistake for "raccord". It seems a coincidence that they're so similar.
Althea Draper Mar 2, 2021:
@Asker Can you tell us, is this the same ship that the 'douille raccord' term passage is about? (If so, then from documents available online, the engine is an MTU engine 16v 396 TE 74 L - maybe this can help figure the 'corde des têtes des pistons' term)
Tony M Mar 2, 2021:
@ Asker The normal name for a piston ring is a 'segment'.
florence metzger Mar 2, 2021:
piston crown.. il faudrait connaitre le type de moteur moteur lent propulsion, moteur des groupes....
SafeTex Mar 2, 2021:
@ all I started my research before others posted but I too came up with "cordon de feu" like in

https://www.ms-motorservice.fr/technipedia/post/dommages-sur...
Althea Draper Mar 2, 2021:
The nearest I could find (in terms of parts) was the 'cordon de feu' - the crown. The only other thing I could come up with (at quite a tangent, I admit) was that it could have something to do with the wear - the term 'usé jusqu’à la corde' meaning worn out, worn to the core etc.
Jane RM (asker) Mar 2, 2021:
The piston head ring?
Tony M Mar 2, 2021:
@ Asker I suspect, but this is outside my personal experience so would need to be checked by research, that this might be referring to the 'chord' (= part of a circle) that represents the domed (or dished) curved upper surface of the piston...

piston head cord

"Cords are premier brands in the world of steel spring piston rings. Those types of piston rings are primarily used for superior oil control in a number of engine environments, agricultural and commercial heavy industrial and stationary. The first steels from Sweden and the United Kingdom are used to ensure total quality assurance and reliability in use."
"Cords piston ring sets contain multi-segment steel rings. They have petrol and diesel applications and are designed to restore compression and oil performance in rebuilt engines."

Example sentence:

"Les jeux de segments de piston contiennent des segments en acier avec des multi-segments. Ils ont des applications et de diesel et d'essence et ils sont dessinés.

Ils sont conçus pour rétablir et restaurer la compression et la performance avec de l'huile et de l'essence."

disagree Tony M : Even if this were the brand name, your translation would not be correct; as so often, word-by-word literal is rarely correct, or at least yields the most idiomatic translation.
