English term

four state teams

Non-PRO English Other Sports / Fitness / Recreation
After I left school, I was a hockey player, I made four state teams and one Australian, when I was in year 12.

He means by numbers, how many times he made these teams, right?

Sorry, if it seems to simple.

Thanks in advance,

Thank you all.

I think he represents the state team in many age teams like Mrs Draper said. Thank you.

Althea Your interpretation is the same as mine, but I don't agree with your punctuation. I see it as "I made four state teams, and one Australian when I was in year 12." He didn't make five teams in one year.
Althea Draper Mar 26, 2021:
I find the punctuation a bit confusing. My guess would be that this is field hockey rather than ice hockey and that he is telling us why they became a hockey player after leaving school, justifying his decision to become a hockey player by saying "I made four state teams and one Australian, when I was in year 12".

In Australian hockey, you can play for your state at under 13 (years old), under 15, under 18, and under 21 and then men's and women's levels. There are also Australian national teams at under 18 and under 21 levels. So, my guess would be that he played 4 seasons in under 15 and under 18 levels for his state, and then for the Australian national under 18 team while in his last year at school.

It is slightly confusing. I assume he was selected to play for his state four years running, and then for the country in his final year of school. After that, he possibly became a professional.

Australia consists of six states (New South Wales , Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, and Western Australia), three internal territories (the Australian Capital Territory, the Jervis Bay Territory, and the Northern Territory), and seven external territories (Ashmore and Cartier Islands, the Australian Antarctic Territory, Christmas Island, the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, the Coral Sea Islands, Heard Island and McDonald Islands, and Norfolk Island). In total, there are ten territories in Australia, with internal territories being on the Australian mainland, and external territories being sovereign territories offshore. Every state and internal territory, excluding the Jervis Bay Territory, has its own executive government, legislative branch, and judicial system.

"made" implies that he was good enough to be selected for these teams

agree Daryo : How "state" and "nation/national" is used from one country to another can be very confusing. You explained it well.// If I tried to explain to you how these terms were used in ex-Yugoslavia, I would probably only achieve to get you a raging headache ...

agree philgoddard : But I think this needs further explanation, which I've tried to do in the discussion box.

OK, a state is like a province in Canada. State team is the team that represents a state.
