Ergänzung von

German to English Tech/Engineering Medical: Pharmaceuticals
Ergänzung von Kapitel XXX zur Übersicht besonderer Arten von Änderungen.

A list of document changes in an SOP vs. previous version.
Normally, if it were supplemented by something, it would be Ergaenzung von X um Y, so I would assume they mean "addition of section XXX ...."
But any clarification would be much appreciated.

Discussion

David Hollywood May 13, 2021:
schlecht formuliert und deswegen zweideutig
Jeff Steffin (asker) May 13, 2021:
I guess it doesn't seem clear whether they're "adding" the section in, or supplementing an existing section, and it's not clear from the context which is which.

Depending on what's meant, which is not entirely clear in this context.
It might be an 'addition to' Chapter X

supplement to (chapter XXX)

I don't think a different meaning is possible in this case other than "something that completes or enhances something else when added to it." https://www.google.com/search?q=supplement&sxsrf=ALeKk032H4C...

neutral David Hollywood : not clear

agree philgoddard : Or addition.

Yes. Ergänzung seems to cover both
neutral Anne Schulz : Yes, but the question is whether "Kapitel XXX" is the 'something' enhancing, or the 'something' to be enhanced.

I'd say something to be enhanced is the more natural assumption. The other option seems more like a theoretical possibility (genitivus subjectivus). If the author had wanted to go the other way, she/he could have said "Ergänzung durch"
neutral uyuni : I understand that later/subsequent changes or additions were made to the SOP. The term 'supplement' sounds like 'appendix' to me, which does not necessarily cover this timeframe. Hence my discussion entry (please see above)...

supplementation of

If you don't find out the intended meaning, "Supplementation of" may provide a similar ambiguity.

neutral Steffen Walter : Für Texte passt m. E. nur "supplement", nicht jedoch "supplementation".

O.k., danke Steffen
