Italian term

tenuta in pianta

Italian to English Other Agriculture
Referring to what it is that makes this new strawberry variety so great...

Is anyone aware of a technical term for this in English?

retention of ripe fruit on the plant

Tenuta literally means to retain or maintain. In the context, it probably means to retain the fruit as long as possible on the plant.

In this connection, I have found tenuta di maturazione in pianta, and it could be that the fruit is then retained on the plant in order to ripe properly, therefore, this would be ripening on the plant or that the ripe fruit is retained for as long as possible on the plant.

The slow yellow change with meridians that remain very obvious and the excellent retention of ripe fruit on the plant, combined with a high sugar content and unique aroma, make Bernini F1 an ideal solution to reduce labor costs, providing very high and distinctive quality standards

Strawberry fruit ripened rapidly on the plant, going from first blush of color to full red in about 1.5 days.

During ripening on the plant, met hyl esters increased 3 to 5 times while ethyl esters remained unchanged.

The massive and intense amount of illumination provided by the present invention facilitates a high degree of efficiency in the picking of the strawberries. The pickers have a large field of view and enough time to be able to determine which berries are ready to be picked and which berries need further ripening on the plant.

picking/harvest timing tolerance

My take. However, there might be a more specific and correct translation.

When to Pick Strawberries
Strawberry season only lasts three to four weeks, so it’s crucial that you know not only how to harvest a strawberry plant, but also when strawberry harvest time begins so that none of them go to waste.

Time until Fruit and Harvest
Strawberries will fruit 4-5 months after planting and will produce mature fruit 4-6 weeks after flowering. Pick berries when they are fully colored, without any pale areas on the outside. Wait until they are dark red if possible, and leave a bit of stem on the harvested berry. The flavor is best at dark red. Strawberries do not ripen further after picking.

Further research could be conducted into picking timing to maximise

the fruit keeps well on the plant

I think the idea is that when they are almost ripe, strawberries (unlike other fruit) keeps well on the plant and can ripen further, becoming sweeter while their flesh remains firm.

Although my personal experience with growing strawberries has been quite the opposite...

(I must admit that this had been puzzling me until I saw Phil's note).

The variety you are writing about sounds like the strawberry grower's dream.

by leaving the fruit on the plant

I would rephrase the sentence around the above.

...by leaving the fruit on the plant there are more nutrients and carbohydrates going into it. This means healthier and tastier food.
