gives greater weight to reason
I think Marco's first suggestion is okay (broader role, but not expanded domain), but I think a physical metaphor of weight rather than breadth is more accurate to convey the idea that what reason says "counts more", that reason has more of a "say" or authority.

acknowledges a broader role for reason
Abbé Maret promoted a conciliation of science and faith.
You could say "an expanded domain" rather than "a broader role".

gives more importance to reason
I think it should be simpler without figurative use of breadth or weight. I would applaud either use in a more literary or poetic work, but the present text is rather staid.
Discussion
I think this sentence may be about recognising the attributes of God by reasoning.
Look at what follows.
So Saisset is saying that "Maret recognised a lot of God's attributes by means of reasoning but still did not truly know God".
