French term

y jouaient les chefs de file

Non-PRO French to English Art/Literary General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters From An Art History Book
Contexte:

Merci Encore,

Barbara

Change log

Aug 10, 2021 15:54: Jennifer White changed "Level" from "PRO" to "Non-PRO"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (3): AllegroTrans, philgoddard, Jennifer White

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Barbara Cochran, MFA (asker) Aug 12, 2021:
Obviously, a pro question.
Emmanuella Aug 11, 2021:
'sauvegardés au cours de la même opération', sous-entendu ' opération de déménagement' où les Boucher et les Fragonard (tableaux) parvinrent en 'chef de file.
Ma lecture.
Emmanuella Aug 11, 2021:
Barbara, ok . However, we have to solve the problem, unless you are sure that it refers to the 'top of the list.
Emmanuella Aug 11, 2021:
Je peux me tromper.
ormiston Aug 11, 2021:
Absolutely no sarcasm intended! Top of the list is very similar to my suggestion (sans sarcasme, juré !)
Barbara Cochran, MFA (asker) Aug 11, 2021:
Just to get in on this for a few seconds. the artists and their works are often referred to as if they are one and the same thing: for example, "we viewed a Renoir at the Louvre".
Katarina Peters Aug 11, 2021:
@ormiston that's what I meant, those artworks were in the lead, or, at the helm (of the line of artworks)
Emmanuella Aug 11, 2021:
Emmanuella Aug 11, 2021:
The remaining pieces (sauvegardés) were transported afterwards...
Emmanuella Aug 11, 2021:
Ormiston,
I simply asked (?) knowing that they are not actors !!!
They are the most important artworks that ' parvinrent avec les seized art collections,
which means that they were chosen/transported in first place (chefs de file ). Consequently, they are on top of the list.
ormiston Aug 11, 2021:
@ Katarina it's not a race! @ Emmanuella nor are they actors!
They are simply the most important artworks, vtop of the list sort of thing
Katarina Peters Aug 11, 2021:
were in the lead ?
Emmanuella Aug 11, 2021:
Played first roles ?
Nikki Scott-Despaigne Aug 11, 2021:
Barbara Cochran, MFA (asker) Aug 10, 2021:
Oui, c'est ça. Vous avez raison, Emmanuella.
Emmanuella Aug 10, 2021:
ormiston Aug 10, 2021:
I don't see where this parade Comes from. Imagining fanfares, etc

Or why not 'took pride of place'
Note from asker:
Thanks for your suggestion. But I think "spearheaded the parade" reflects the almost constant movement of the artwork into Jeu de Paume.
