English term

the central bank's reserve buying

English to French Social Sciences Economics
Hi! I am working on a translation for an American University professor who's publishing in a French journal. I don't understand what he means by that (obviously, I can't ask him otherwise I would have).
I can't find the meaning and the translation of "reserve buying"...

For a little context, the writer is talking few lines before about the Fed which had had to spend billions of dollars to maintain its exchange rate. "Despite the exchange rate quoted by currency traders, the real value of the dollar should have appreciated, nullifying the impact of the Fed's interventions on the current account balance. Inflation should therefore have offset the distributional impact of the central bank’s reserve buying."

Can anyone help ?
Thanks!

Daryo Aug 16, 2021:
Exactly in his text it's "the reserve" = the institution (the Federal Reserve) that's doing the buying.

the central bank's reserve buying
=
buying done by the central bank's reserve

Tomasso Aug 15, 2021:
Federal Reserve buying its own bonds https://www.cnbc.com/2020/12/16/fed-decision-december-2020-f...

The Fed delivered in that respect, saying it would continue to buy at least $120 billion of bonds each month “until substantial further progress has been made toward the Committee’s maximum employment and price stability goals,” the post-meeting statement said.

disagree Daryo : wrong meaning of "reserve" IN THIS TEXT they are not buying foreign currencies to increase their "currency reserves". it's "the reserve" (in effect the FED) that is buying domestic bonds

the text told you that the central bank was supporting the dollar, which means buying a currency that is a reserve currency.
