Spanish term

que lo fríes

Spanish to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature Comic book translation
"Esta es la segunda vez que lo fríes para ayudarme."

In a comic a character ends up winning a battle and says that. I have not seen friar used this way. I'm assuming it means like "you got your butt kicked" but just wanted to confirm. So far I've translated it as "This is the second time you bit it to help me."

O G V Aug 18, 2021:
no parece que vaya con el contexto el refrán que citas, Kristina, debe ser más bien algo que sugiere "matar", "gunned down" como propongo abajo
Kristina Love Aug 18, 2021:
This might be a reference to a refran: "Al freír será el reír." This translates to "He who laughs last laughs longest."

I also found an instance of someone saying, "lo fríes tiros" and that was translated as telling someone to "gun him down."

I'm assuming the character is saying this sarcastically to the person he has defeated. Or is he saying it to an ally who really did help him win the battle? Is it clear? And does context make it clear that "lo" is an "it" and not a "him"?
Toni Castano Aug 18, 2021:
@Jim Your phrase is extremely ambiguous and can mean several different things depending on the context. "Freír" (the right infinitive) is a polysemic verb with different possible interpretations. The key question here: ¿Quién fríe qué o a quién? Who does what to whom or to what? This is not clear to me at all.
If you can post an image of the comic, so much the better.

this is the second time you fry him/come him under to help me

Hello!
In portuguese the slang to "fry somebody" usually means that you put the person in a bad situation and it seems that similar meaning could be also in spanish (fastidiar, molestar). So, it coud be understood as "this is the second time you "come him under" to help me... in the sense that he was put in a difficult situation. Also found "to fry someone" meaning to cause harm to another.

Maybe would make more sense than the idea of "killing", it's not possible to kill someone twice...

Fritar alguém - Ferrar alguém, deixar a pessoa em maus lençóis, em má condição.

Meanings of "to fry someone"
English
To cause stress or harm to another. On the workplace it may mean to terminate, or to discipline them. On the battlefield it means 'to kill', also 'to toast them'.

neutral Kristina Love : That's a good point about the impossility of killing someone twice, although in a comic book, who knows what bizarre things might happen? I've never heard the phrase "come him under," though.

Yes, Kristina, I was reading again, maybe "threaten" would fit better?

es sinónimo de liquidar, de acabar con alguien

3. coloquial Matar o asesinar a tiros.

no sé si encaja en el contexto pero imagino que han acabado con un rival con algún arma convencional o con mucho calor

"lo" lo traduzco como "him", suponiendo que es persona masculina
puede ser "it" si es cosa
