Dutch term

wol

Dutch to English Science Botany Fungicide
Can anyone help with this please. In a table of applications from the COLLEGE VOOR DE TOELATING VAN
GEWASBESCHERMINGSMIDDELEN EN BIOCIDEN. Perhaps I am being bit thick but struggling to work out what "wol" had got to do with things
Anemonen, wol
Ranonkels, wol
Bloemknollen van Anemoon (vermeerderingsteelt van wol)
325 gram per 10 kg wol
Bloemknollen en knolbloemen van Anemoon (vermeerderingsteelt m.u.v. wol en bloementeelt)
Proposed translations (English)
4 mineral wool

Ruchira Raychaudhuri Sep 27, 2021:
Glad you got a clarification from the client. Sometimes the source is just too cryptic! I thought Sindy's suggestion sounded quite plausible as well. I'll post an answer, thanks.
Charles Stanford (asker) Sep 27, 2021:
Finally got a response from the customer - Ruchira was right with the "mineral wool" (growing medium). Please post it as an answer Ruchira, but thanks to all of you, Sindy, Phil. Liz. Willemina and Jack (maybe overlay amounts to mineral wool Jack, so apologies if I am doing you a disservice...)
sindy cremer Sep 21, 2021:
@Charles Please have a look at my refs. Anemone can be grown (vermeerderd) from its seed, which is embedded in the 'wol'.
Charles Stanford (asker) Sep 21, 2021:
I would like to thank you all for your fantastic input. I don't think it's clearcut so have asked the agency to check with the customer and I will pass on the response. I really appreciate the time and trouble you have all taken to respond
Ruchira Raychaudhuri Sep 21, 2021:
On second thought.. Could it be referring to wool as a growing medium?
Mineral wool or rock wool (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mineral_wool) is used as a growing medium in horticulture. Although in that case, it should been 'vermeerderingsteelt op wol', right?
https://edepot.wur.nl/507927: a lot of references to steenwol, minerale wol etc. used in cultivation
https://www.canna-uk.com/characteristics_of_rockwool (& many other online sources): "Rock wool is a widely utilised substrate in commercial horticulture for the production of crops as diverse as tomatoes, melons, cucumbers, peppers, strawberries, herbs and cut flowers."
Ruchira Raychaudhuri Sep 21, 2021:
@Liz Askew.. 'Wolf' refers to Peronospora farinosa. As you can see further on in the document you have linked: "Spinazie: Ter bestrijding van wolf (Peronospora farinosa)." See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peronospora_farinosa.
Ruchira Raychaudhuri Sep 21, 2021:
Agree with Willemina.. It could be referring to infection of the flower bulb (propagation) by 'wolluizen' (=mealybugs) which lead to the growth of a mold fungus on certain plants (https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolluizen).

See https://wetten.overheid.nl/BWBR0019266/2006-09-01/0/Bijlage which is about plant protection products (such as Captosan - which I think is the subject of your translation (https://tinyurl.com/ykx4tr7r)?):
"II.K. Knelpunt Bloeiende potplanten en orchideeën – wol- en schildluizen"
"Knelpunt: Bloeiende potplanten en orchideeën tegen wol- en schildluizen"
"Toepassingen
In de bedekte teelt van orchideeën en bloeiende potplanten, ter bestrijding van wolluis (Pseudococcidae) en schildluis (o.a. Aspidiotus nerii)."
philgoddard Sep 21, 2021:
Horticultural fleece, for frost protection?

Thanks all the same. Helpful to know that it's not immediately obvious
Willemina Hagenauw Sep 21, 2021:
In that case... you're on your own. It was worth a try. But I can't think of wool being used as a fungicide.
Charles Stanford (asker) Sep 21, 2021:
I don't think so to be honest Willemina. The whole text is exclusively about control of fungi in plants, trees and fruit. No other mention of any bugs etc.
Willemina Hagenauw Sep 21, 2021:
lice? There is a bug that is called a "wolluis" (mealy bug" in English). Might it be an abbreviation of "wolluis"? One of many links: https://royalbrinkman.nl/kennisbank-gewasbescherming/plagen/...

wol => fluff? cotton wool?
