German term

Landcommisariatsboth / Landkommisariatsbote

German to English Social Sciences Government / Politics
This title (occupation) appears in an 1836 birth record from the formerly Bavarian village of Kottweiler-Schwanden (Pfalz): "Franz Schnorr alt dreißig acht Jahr, Landcommissariatsboth wohnhaft zu Homburg." A search online brings up several references to this man with the title written as "Landkommisariatsbote." I'm trying to find an appropriate translation for this title.

I did find this online: "The Landkommissariat Homburg (officially Land Commissariat Homburg ) was one of twelve administrative districts in the Bavarian Rhine District (renamed "Kreis Pfalz" in 1837), which existed from 1818 and was renamed in 1862 to the District Office Homburg . The administrative area was in today's districts of Kaiserslautern , Kusel and Südwestpfalz in Rhineland-Palatinate as well as in the Saarpfalz district in Saarland , the eponymous administrative seat was in the Saarland city of Homburg ."

"Bote" usually refers to a messenger, but perhaps a "representative" in this case? I just don't know...

district commissioner's messenger

"Dem Landkommissar standen ein Aktuar, zwei Schreiber und ein Bote zur Verfügung"
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landkommissariat_Germersheim

(...an actuary, two scribes, and a messenger)

If you’re not entirely happy with “messenger”, here’s a site with “historical” occupations I have found helpful for genealogy projects:

Peer comment(s):

agree Gordon Matthews : "Schreiber" is a scribe or clerk, so "Bote" has to be a messenger.

I would steer away from anything with "commissariat"

commissariat

Bote is certainly well below the rank of commissioner.

Unlike a job description (nature of work done), a job title (official role) generally warrants initial caps.
Peer comment(s):

neutral David Hollywood : absolutely and let's see how the "Land" bit turns out...maybe district office clerk...and anything with "commissariat" would be iffy IMO

Thanks. Asker already seems to have solved the 'Landcommisariat' component to his/her own satisfaction.
neutral AllegroTrans : Not against "Commissariat" in principle given the rather militarised nature of C19th Germany

Yes, asker is happy with it. The stated context is a 'birth record' rather than narrative prose.

Deputy to the Regional Governor's Office

A bit too late now, but an historical connexion could have been made with a /sous-/préfecture that sometimes translates as a Regional Governor's Sub-Dept.

Aktuar isa Registrar or Recorder rather than an Actuary, Schreiber a Scribe or Scrivener and Bote a Deputy or Attaché as well as a 'Messenger'.
Example sentence:

Fonds du Landkommissariat (sous-préfecture) de Ribeauvillé. • Affaires de nationalité, naturalisations.

Peer comment(s):

agree Lancashireman : OR regional governor's office's deputy
